Room Service

Well, everyday that passess this hospital becomes weirder sometimes it seems like a hotel and at other times it seems like a summer camp. Virginia had a room service hamburguer and ate it all. Apetite is going well and she is making less trips to the "throne". Yesterday it was handicrafts and walking and today she continues knitting. The excess salivation has diminished but still makes it difficult to talk. She is still angry because her hair continues to grow. they tell her that it is certain that she will loose her hair, we'll see how this fight ends. For the rest Virginia is taking it one day at a time and trying not to count the days untils she is discharged. And the Cronopio BMT continues

Otro dia en el paraiso/Another Day in Paradise

Doing yoga and knitting! This are the uncommon side effects for Virginia's transplant process. Some feelings of "being grounded" in the hospital and not being able to step outside for at least two to three weeks. The other side effects wax and wane. Virginia y knitting a green scarf and the yoga is to try to make her mind blank for the first time in her life. The doctors, nurses and the crew are super eficient and caring in general. A mi manera/My way

Since Virginia was a small baby she had a "iwilldoitmyway"attitude that is strongly codified in her DNA. It's so much this way that doctors gave her some contraceptives to stop her from having her period but she went on ahead and started last night having her period. As you may imagine this is a problem for ladies in the best of circumstances and when your blood counts are decreasing this is slightly more thatn a nuisance. She had platelets transfused today to help her clot and stop bleeding faster and her blood is more or less stable albeit in the expected "downhill". Tomorrow is the infamous day +5 in which the window of "feeling the worst" will beging due to effects of chemo, inmunosuppresants and lowering blood counts (the new bone marrow is not producing blood cells yet and the old ones have started to die off). This will last approx two weeks.Virginia continues to have soaring spirits and does not talk about being scared or sad or angry. Don't you think though that she does not have her pet peeves. She is currently holding a grudge with the doctors because her hairs have not fallen. Take a hold of this, even Virginia's hairs have the"iwilldoitmyway"attitude.

Come niña come./Eat girl eat.

Throughout the weekend Virginia continued to struggle with some GI problems and tried to eat more fruit and yogurt. She is going less to "the throne" and feels weak and sleepy but in good spirits. She has a stubble growing on her head and is getting suspicious that the chemo will not denude her of hair. The doctors reassured her that she will loose each and every hair in her body. It better because Virginia will kill them if they made her shave her head in vain. Whe are not yet in the "decline" that will come in the next two weeks but had a mild preview.

Well my dears, the rough play of the therapy has started. The side effects for the chemotherapy have begun. Virginia continues "taking it easy" but thanks to mucositis (inflamation of the mucosas, specially of the gastrointestinal tract)has had to move to the white throne. She had to cultures taken to make sure that she did not get any infections and is currently receiving Lomotil and IV rehydration. Ana has decided not to continue going to the "out house" of the visitor's bathroom and now waits to go home to take care of bussines. Don Ignacio and Dona Arlene continue to help out in everything and cuddling "the girls". The rumble is on but remember that Virginia is part of the Jack Veneno gang (Dominican Wrestling Reference) so we know how this story is going to end.(Jackd Veneno and his crew always won in the end)

Despegue/Lift off

Ladies and Gentleman yesterday/today Virginia received the infusion of 750ml of fresh organic bone marrow. It all started around 11:00pm and ended at 3:00am. The doctorsss say that it's full sail ahead but is the caveat that she will get worse before she gets better. She will be able to go back home when she is able to walk, eat and do all her activites of daily living by herself. Virginia points out that she is able to do all that right now and the doctors should be discharge now before she feels worse, that she will come back if she feels ill. Virginia walks several times a day and wants to do at least one mile. Yesterday Don Ignacio and Doña Arlene went to dine with Shereen, Tim and Ana to Ray's a beautiful restaurant on Seattle's West side with views to Pugent Sound. As I said before, we have Lift Off and on our way to stardom.

Dia Cero/Day Zero
Aburrrrr!
Today is the day of lift off. As I type this the donated bone marrow is traveling towards Seattle and will arrive to the hospital at about 11:00pm PST so the actual date for "day zero" is not certain. This thing about day zero is about counting the days since the transplant. The most important and dangerous days are the first 90. Today in the doldrums of waiting some visitors and balloons to celebrate Z day broke the tension. What happens is that the transplants resets the inmune system and erases all inmunological memory so Virginia will have the inmunity of a new born. The rest of Virginia will continue to be 31. Today she felt a little bit nauseous and she assures us that there is no way that she is pregnant and we will give her the benefit of the doubt. The Compasin helped with the nausea but did not take it away. At eleven thirty or in the wee hours of the morning it will be done and Virginia will wake up tomorrow with a new bone marrow!

A 10 pesos la "lectura"(You are going to have serious disease...and will struggle...) se pueden sacar un par de pasajes a Seattle.

Pitinglish- A "relax"day today. Endovenous chemo started yesterday and ended today. Virginia had a little bit of nausea today but was well controlled with Compasin. Don Ignacio and Doña Arlene are visiting from today until the 5th of April. Anne Faboulous is the head nurse of Virginia and had a funny episode today with Virginia after she put a medication that burns when injected and Virginia did not pay attention to the warning. When she felt the burn she jumped in bed and rocked back and forth on all fours. The nurse and Virginia cracked up and she stated taht she had never seen a patient do this in all her years as a nurse. This is way more funny in Spanish.

Luego a mimir a casa,(medio cansadita).
